St. Jerome.

This illustration is a digital rendition of St. Jerome at his desk taken from a copper engraving (Saint Jerome in His Study, 1514) by the Northern Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer. Saint Jerome is known for his translation of Holy Scripture into Latin. His translation is known as the Vulgate. Jerome also left behind numerous works of theology and commentaries on Holy Scripture. He had a working knowledge of Greek and Hebrew, the languages of the Septuagint and Hebrew Bible respectively, which he translated into Latin. To complete his task, Jerome moved from Rome to Jerusalem to gain a better understanding of Jewish commentary. He died in Bethlehem at a monastery next to the Church of the Nativity. Jerome is the patron saint of translators, librarians, and encyclopedists.

More: Jerome sits at his study, the crucifix before him, ever intently studying Holy Scripture. The scene, directly taken from Dürer’s engraving, is entirely imaginary. The setting is Renaissance Europe rather than 4th C Palestine. Depictions of saints continue to be common themes for visual artists.

The name Jerome is also rendered Hieronymus. It is believed that the Dutch artist Hieronymus Bosch, a contemporary of Albrecht Dürer, was not only named after St. Jerome but meticulously put pictorial form to passages of St. Jerome’s Vulgate. Scholarship suggests that Bosch was in fact a devout Catholic during a time of religious controversy shortly preceding the Protestant Reformation.

St. Jerome is a good companion for translators, librarians, and encyclopedists as well as students of languages, and with Bosch’s example, artists and anyone interested in a careful reading of Holy Scripture, his work serving as an admonition to return to careful and sober study.
