The artwork is based on enamel crucifixes made in Limoges, France in the late 12th C. These crosses are associated with the abbey, or Priory at Grandmont. In the original design, the cross itself is rendered in light and dark green colored enamel finely inlaid in stippled copper. Directional protrusions in the form of new buds sprout from this Tree of Life. The tree is at once the cross on which Jesus suffers death, but also the tree on which new life is shown to be budding forth, the fruit of which is the body of Christ. The suffering Christ has pale skin with ribs showing.

More: In Scripture, the Tree of Life first appears in Genesis, then Proverbs, and also in Revelations. In Genesis 2, God plants many trees in the Garden of Eden. Two of these trees are specifically named: the Tree of Life, and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. It is the latter whose fruit Adam is forbidden to eat with the warning from God that eating shall result in death. Adam and Eve eat of this fruit anyhow and are expelled from the Garden and away from the Tree of Life. It is mentioned that the fruit of the Tree of Life is the source of eternal and everlasting life.

The image of the cross as the Tree of Life makes the connection between the life, death and resurrection of Jesus with the source of eternal life after the fall of Adam and Eve, and the ultimate remedy to death and expulsion from the Garden. Jesus' body becomes the fruit of everlasting life.

The original crucifix includes the Christogram in irregular form: IH[SU]S XP[ISTU]S (Jesus Christ). This is in place of the Scriptural inscription: INRI (Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews). Limoges Crosses are early examples of a focus on the suffering Christ. Depictions of the suffering Christ usher in a realist movement in painting and religious art within the next century. Today, examples of Limoges Crosses can be found at the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
